Opera Omaha Recognizes Hayward Students
Every year Opera Omaha sponsors a “Poetry and Music Project”; Nebraska students in grades 3-12 may submit poetry and, if selected, their poetry is set to music by professional composers.
Each year, all third and fourth grade students at Hayward complete a poetry/lyric writing unit in music class with Ms. Meredith. At the completion of the unit, they may submit their poems to the “Poetry and Music Project”. This year, 11 poems were selected from a field of 70 Nebraska entries and two Hayward 3rd grade poems made the cut:
“Mountain Pride” by Jackson Walters,
“Zoey the Jelly Fish” by Zophia Warren,
Zoey and Jackson participated in a zoom work session with composer Alex Lamb on March 24th, during the zoom, they were able to hear their poem set to music for the first time and they were encouraged to make suggestions about how they wanted the song to sound.
Zophia and Jackson’s poetry will premiere on the Poetry & Music Project Concert on Saturday, May 14th at 2pm at the Benson Theatre in Omaha. The concert is free and open to the public, it will also be live streamed. *All submitted poems will be printed in the Poetry & Music Project book which will be distributed to all poets, teachers, concert audience, and available online.
